PU,  WEI  |  蒲洧

Personal Profile

Born in Kunming, Yunnan Province, Pu Wei began painting at the age of three, fueled by a deep love for traditional Chinese culture, especially Chinese painting. Through years of artistic exploration, Pu developed a distinctive style in 2013, founding "Xuancai Painting" (The Color of Surupa). In 2018, she launched her personal art brand, "Pu Wei Xuancai Painting."

Xuancai Painting, meaning "mystical colors," is rooted in Eastern philosophy and Chinese cultural traditions. It represents a unique form of contemporary Chinese painting, classified under the Xuancai school and belonging to the realm of mental imagery art. The paintings reflect the “mystical colors” of a bright and serene state of mind, conveying insights into the natural world and the cosmic truth.

Using traditional Chinese materials such as pigments, Chinese rice paper, water, and ink, Pu Wei employs advanced spiritual practices like Dzogchen meditation to create artworks that traverse reality and the void. Her artistic journey outlines a progressive path of mental imagery, transitioning from "ideas" to "non-forms" to "formlessness." Pu’s unique philosophy elevates Chinese mental imagery art to new heights.

Xuancai Painting blends contemporary artistic language with traditional Chinese techniques, incorporating light and color while drawing inspiration from Western painting methods. The style is bold, free, and expressive, featuring rich, vibrant colors, unpredictable light and shadow, ethereal compositions, and dynamic vitality. It embodies the Chinese artistic spirit of "unity between heaven and humanity" and the aesthetic ideal of "great form without shape," presenting a fresh approach to Chinese art.

Due to its originality, distinctiveness, and cultural depth, Xuancai Painting has garnered significant attention in the global art scene. In recent years, Pu Wei has participated in numerous international exhibitions in cities like New York, San Diego, Miami, London, Paris, Florence, Milan, Barcelona, Lisbon, Basel, Tokyo, Dubai, Vienna, and Munich, earning multiple prestigious international art awards.
